Doing a Co-occurring Resource Inventory
Another tool that can be useful in the decision-making process involved in an open space plan, plan of conservation and development, or other critical and mandatory process is a Co-occurring Resource Inventory.
A Co-occurring Resource Inventory is a collaborative project usually involving a town Conservation Commission and our staff at the Green Valley Institute, and is generally carried out once the commission has completed a community resource inventory. During the Co-occurring Resources Inventory process, geographic information systems data sets are selected and agreed upon by everyone involved in the process, and then input into a computer model, resulting in a map that shows the approximate locations of resource “hot spots”, areas where the greatest number of resources are located. Such a process is iterative, and generally involves several meetings between our staff and the Conservation Commission over the span of several months.
Through a Co-occurring Resources Inventory, a town Conservation Commission can ultimately gain a far greater understanding of the individual resources that are present within their town, and how these resources are related to one another.
