 The Last Green Valley

UMASS Extension

The Green Valley Institute Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Center

Our GIS Center offers maps, digital GIS data, and technical expertise for town commissions, land trusts, and related non-profit organizations that work within the 35-town region of the Quinebaug-Shetucket National Heritage Corridor.  We maintain a number of natural resource and land use GIS data sets, some which have been processed from other readily available sources, others that we have developed ourselves.  We also provide instruction and some technical assistance in how to utilize these maps and digital data to develop:

  • Community resource inventories
  • Co-occurring resource inventories
  • Open space and conservation plans
  • A useable foundation for a town plan of conservation and development
  • A practical system for reviewing subdivision and other land use change proposals that takes town-wide resource priorities into account.

Let us help your town or land trust improve the knowledge base from which your land use decisions are made.

Other sources for GIS data sets: Two useful websites for obtaining free GIS data for either the Connecticut region or the Massachusetts region of the Quinebaug-Shetucket National Heritage Corridor are the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection GIS Data page, and the MassGIS GIS Database page.

The Green Valley Institute GIS Center is operated in partnership with the Quinebaug-Shetucket National Heritage Corridor Councils of Governments, and as a subsidiary of the Center for Land Use Education and Research (CLEAR), University of Connecticut Extension. The UCONN GeoSpatial Technology Program offers training courses in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS).  These courses are geared toward training municipal officials and others who influence land use decisions, and are offered several times per year.  Further information about these courses and how to register can be found at http://clear.uconn.edu/geospatial/training.htm.
